Meet Bertie – A Dog Who’s Finally Safe

Bertie’s story begins far from comfort or safety. Found as a stray on the streets of Romania, it was heartbreakingly clear he had suffered terrible abuse. By the time he arrived in the UK, his body—and spirit—bore the scars of his past.

Soon after his arrival, Bertie began to show troubling behaviours, including unpredictable biting. A visit to the vet revealed the painful truth: Bertie had old, untreated rib injuries—evidence of repeated beatings. Further tests suggested something even more devastating—Bertie may have suffered brain damage from his trauma.

Loud noises, fire, smoke, sirens—everyday things most dogs might ignore are terrifying triggers for Bertie. Because of his unpredictable reactions and complex needs, it wouldn’t be safe or fair to rehome him. So Bertie has found a place to stay permanently—with a specially trained, understanding foster family who can give him the stability he needs.

Bertie now lives as comfortably as he can, thanks to a strict medication routine, a special diet, and ongoing veterinary support. His care is funded by the rescue that refused to give up on him.
